Shiva Sahasranama -- Linga Purana Version ( 1.65.54 to 1.65.168)

A Shiva sahasranama is a list of a thousand names of Shiva, the Supreme God. In Hindu tradition a sahasranama is a type of devotional hymn listing many names of a deity. The names provide an exhaustive catalog of the attributes, functions, and major mythology associated with the figure being praised. There are at least eight different versions of the Shiva sahasranama. It shows the antiquity of Shiva Sahasranama.

Shiva Sahasranama is a "Nama Vidya". 'Nama' means 'Name' . If anyone want to explain about the Supreme Reality ( ie., Parabrahman ) in human language he must use some characteristics, Some phrases, some ideas, inorder to impart the knowledge. When we assimilate all those concepts, ideas,adjectives,..etc as "NOUNs" . They are called 'Nama'.

For example, When Svetasvatara Rishi explained about the Supreme reality he used the word 'Mahesvara'. i.e., "Great lord'. When we use the same phrase as 'NOUN' it becomes 'NAMA'.
Like that, 'Shiva Shasranama' means 1000 names which are usually used by our Rishis to explain about the Ultimate reality. Without using these names no one can explain about the Ultimate reality.

Shiva sahasranama is much older than Vishnu sahasranama. In fact, the 'NamaVidya' has vedik origins too. The Satarudriyam(Sri Rudram) contains about 100 names of Almighty Rudra. The Rudra Bhaktas of Vedik period were the first to use 'Nama Vidya' as a technique. It became so famous that others have also started doing same.

The following is a list of several Versions of Shiva Sahasranama identified so far:

1. Mahabharata 13.17.30-150 (Anuśāsanaparvan Version)
2. Linga Purana (version 1, LP 1.65.54-168) is close to the Mahabharata Anushasanaparvan version.
3. Linga Purana (version 2, LP 1.98.27-159) has some passages in common with LP version 1, but also with other sources
4. Shivapurana 4.35.1-131.
5. Mahabharata (Śāntiparvan version) 12.284.68-180. But not found in critical editions

7. Brahmanda Purana (38.1.1-100) is almost the same as the Vayu Purana version.
